What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is an international standardized test of English language proficiency. Non-native English language speakers take this test for study, work, or migration abroad. The University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council, IDP, and IELTS Australia govern this examination. This examination ensures all the highest international standards of the English language evaluation. The whole IELTS test evaluates your English language proficiency if you plan to study or work in countries where English is the primary language for communication. You need to clear all of the four language tests; they are reading, writing, speaking and listening. Universities and companies in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA well acknowledge this examination. Every professional body, immigration authority, and other government agency in English-speaking countries also considers and recognizes these test results.
Formats of IELTS
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) generally has two formats-
- ELTS Academic
- IELTS General Training.
The University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), the British Council, IDP, and IELTS Australia govern the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), an internationally recognized test that measures the English language proficiency of non-native speakers who wish to study, work, or migrate abroad. This ensures that the examination meets the highest international standards for English language evaluation.
Designed to assess your English skills, the IELTS test focuses on four key areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. If you plan to study or work in countries where English is the primary language, passing all four tests is essential. Universities and companies in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA widely acknowledge this examination. Furthermore, professional bodies, immigration authorities, and government agencies in English-speaking countries recognize IELTS test results as well.
IELTS Academic
IELTS Academic is for candidates who want to apply for higher education or professional registration in English-speaking countries. The main purpose of the examination is to judge whether a candidate is ready to begin studying or training in the English language. Countries that widely recognize IELTS for studying are US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
IELTS General Training
IELTS General Training is for aspirants who are looking to migrate (permanent residency) to New Zealand, Australia, Canada, US, and the UK or applying for secondary education, training programs and work experience in an English-speaking environment. Here the examination focuses on basic survival skills of a candidate in a broad social and workplace environment.
You can opt for either one of them depending upon your requirement or the university/course you will be applying to. Candidates should know that both versions of the IELTS test help assess their listening, reading, writing, and speaking language skills accurately.
IELTS Section-wise Syllabus
- Writing
- Reading
- Listening
- Speaking
Writing – IELTS Academic
- It includes two tasks where the topics are of general interest and relatable for candidates applying for an undergraduate or postgraduate program.
- A writing task of at least 150 words where the candidate must summarize, describe, or explain a table, graph, chart, or diagram. For the first task, teachers will hand students a paper containing either a diagram, table, or graph. Students must then recapitulate and interpret the given data in their own words. Teachers may ask students to explain a certain data entry, process the given information, or follow a flowchart to reach a logical conclusion.
- In the next task, students need to write an essay as a response to deduction from the given information and support their argument with relevant examples, through the given data. Please note that the writing style should be strictly formal.
Writing - IELTS GENERAL TRAINING
- It also includes two tasks; yet, it is much easier than that of the academic format.
- You will be asked to write a letter as per the given situation. The letter can be formal, semi-formal or personal depending upon the situation presented. You will be asked to explain, request for something or support your argument to a certain authority.
- Given the viewpoint, write a formal essay supporting the arguments and opinions with relevant instances.
Reading
- Three long reading passages with tasks. Texts range from descriptive and factual to discursive, and analytical which includes non-verbal material like diagrams, graphs, and illustrations.
- Authentic texts (taken from books, journals, and newspapers) form the basis of the reading module. This module comprises three texts of general interest that address issues relevant to candidates entering postgraduate or undergraduate courses. Both Academic and General reading modules contain three passages or sections with 40 questions to be answered in 60 minutes. Question types include multiple-choice, sentence or summary completion, identifying data for short-answer questions, matching lists or phrases, and identifying writers’ views/attitudes.
Reading – IELTS Academic
This includes three long paragraphs which can be descriptive, factual or analytical. These paragraphs are basically excerpts taken from newspapers, research works, journals, books, or even magazines. Targeting a non-specialist audience, the texts are ideal for testing higher education aspirants or for professionals seeking work abroad.
Reading – IELTS GENERAL TRAINING
Similar to the academic format, here the excerpts can be passages from advertisements, company guidelines, brochures, and so on. This is relatively easier than the academic format as the selected text is generally something that one encounters on a day-to-day basis.
Listening
- The Listening module is divided into four sections.
- The first two conversations are concerned with social needs, while the last two are concerned with situations more closely related to education.
- The conversations could be both monologues and dialogues or conversations. These conversations can be heard once only. A variety of question types are asked, like multiple-choice, short-answer questions, note completion, sentence completion, labelling a diagram, etc.
- The CD is played for 30 minutes and a student has to answer 40 questions. Students have to get 10 minutes to transfer answers on the answer sheet.
Sections 1 and 2 are about everyday, social situations.
Recording 1 – The first recording would have a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context.
Recording 2 – The second recording would happen to be a monologue set in an everyday social context.
Sections 3 and 4 are about educational and training situations.
Recording 3 – The following recording would be a conversation between four people set in an educational or training context.
Recording 4 – And the final recording would be a monologue on an academic subject.
Speaking
The face-to-face interview includes short questions, speaking at length about a familiar topic and a structured discussion. It is like a structured interview with an emphasis on general speaking skills. It assesses whether candidates have the required knowledge and skills to communicate effectively with native speakers of English.
There are 3 parts in speaking section –
Introduction round, cue card round, and a conversation round.
Total time: 11 to 14 minutes

What sets us apart, in our endeavour to offer Ielts training in Chandigarh
Understanding the Need for Quality Education
The International IELTS Centre (IIC), run by seasoned teachers, was the first to recognize the growing aspiration among students for foreign education. This shift has drawn critical attention, yet unfortunately, not enough efforts are being made to address the decline in teaching quality. IIC stands out as the only IELTS institute in Chandigarh that has sensed this appetite for change. We create an environment where students feel accepted, regardless of their slow learning pace or non-English background. This commitment to inclusivity is what makes IIC the IELTS Coaching in Chandigarh. The benefits of our IELTS course become evident to students as they begin to experience these advantages right from the start.
Our Impeccable Action Plan
We take pride in our meticulously crafted plan of action for our IELTS classes. The journey begins with an orientation session, where students become acquainted with time-tested strategies for solving each of the four modules. This three-day orientation session guides students through one sample test of all four modules. By attending these sessions, aspirants can reap the maximum benefits from our IELTS Coaching in Chandigarh. Additionally, trainers assess each student’s learning pace and language proficiency.
Tailored Learning Experience
To address areas of improvement, we strategically assign students to specific batches. This approach ensures that no student feels out of place and receives the best possible start, whether in language-building sessions or in correcting grammatical errors. Initially, students who require extensive training join the Trackers batch, where we focus on strengthening their foundational skills. We ensure that they can solve tests for all four modules with confidence.
Supportive Environment for Success
To combat any defeatist attitudes, we prioritize accessible language in these tests. Our trainers provide ongoing support to simplify complex concepts and foster a positive learning atmosphere. By creating this nurturing environment, we empower our students to overcome challenges and excel in their IELTS journey.
As students progress, we shift them to a higher batch called Chasers. Here, they undergo rigorous training that helps them apply learned strategies with precision. This transition allows them to build on their skills and gain confidence. Once students demonstrate readiness to sit for the exams, we place them in the Achievers batch. This decision follows thorough discussions and counseling with the director, ensuring that each student is adequately prepared for the challenges ahead.
In the Achievers batch, students get the opportunity to practice diligently while focusing on eliminating any remaining errors in their approach. Throughout this final phase of IELTS exam preparation, our trainers and module experts remain present at every step to guide and motivate the students. Aspirants who adhere to this roadmap possess a 100% potential of clearing the IELTS in their first attempt.
